The Hall Lane Moving Process - Part 1 (How an estimate should be done)
Every moving company has their own way of taking care of their customers for a positive moving experience. Hall Lane has its very own unique way of making sure our customers enjoy their move. Our goal is to make our customers’ move as simple and as pleasurable as possible.
When one of our expert estimators comes to your home they explain in detail how we move your furniture from one residence to another. It is very important that the potential customer listens to the information that is being provided. There are certain things that need to happen to make the move go as smoothly as possible and the customer plays a key role.
The Estimate
The estimator will come to your place of residence and analyze the contents of each room with you. As the estimator goes through your home he sets out to accomplish two goals. One is to determine the weight of your belongings and other is to create an inventory of your home’s contents. It is in the best interest of the customer to tell the estimator exactly what contents will be moving on the actual day of the move. That way the estimator can be as accurate as possible in figuring out your weight, which determines your cost.
As the estimator travels from room to room he will explain that each piece of furniture will be pad wrapped and inventoried by the actual movers. During this time with the estimator, if there is a piece of furniture that needs special attention because it is a keepsake or heirloom, please be sure to inform the estimator. He will make a note for the driver to take extra special care of that particular piece of furniture.
It can be very difficult for the estimator to determine how many boxes will be needed for a given move especially if you are not working with a reputable moving company. A general rule of thumb is 1000 pounds of furniture will require about 10 boxes. For example if you house has 10,000 pounds of furniture you will need approximately 100 boxes to pack your house. Determining how many boxes tends to be a case-by-case situation as the contents of each home vary tremendously and this is what can make that estimate tricky. However, most experienced moving companies will be able to deliver a good approximation of the number of boxes needed by the conclusion of the estimate, as per the weight of the contents projected by the estimator.
To achieve an accurate estimation of weight, be prepared to have at least three experienced moving companies come to estimate your home’s contents. This will give you the best idea of how much weight you really have. Remember, you will only pay for the actual weight so, if your furniture and boxes weigh more then the estimate you will pay more and vice versa. And, this is why it is critical to work with experienced moving companies during this part of the process.
